If any technical criticism could be leveled at Bouguereau, it would be that many of his compositions are static and perfunctory. Of course, such criticism could easily be countered with an argument that anything more dynamic would probably detract from the mind blowing finesse in paint handling.
ReplyDeleteThere is a limit to what a canvas can hold, degree of finish, complexity of design, form/color, something has to give in order to achieve unity, while creating a hierarchy that allows some aspect to shine. Bouguereau!
