  1. Just curious, do you have a background in art history? I'm always surprised by some of the obscure references (Shorty Lazar, for example) you whip out that seem like they could only come from some pretty deep research into the history of academic art.

    1. My background is in painting, the art history is for my own edification …monographs, exhibition catalogues, auction catalogues, contemporary periodicals ~

      and speaking of Shorty:

  2. What sort of painting do you do? Anything like the work of the artists you post about?

I'm an art student, and have found some the information you've shared to be quite helpful and fascinating. The material regarding 19th century art has particularly been of interest to me because I'm interested in the work of the old masters, and I can't decide whether that era is the culmination or nadir of that lineage (the reality I'm sure is complicated and somewhere in between).

    1. Oils …they are more like what I post than not.

In each age something's lost and something's gained (I don't know).
